The phrase “financial literacy” has become a popular buzzword and a hot topic in the worlds of education and finance. As awareness of the importance of financial education continues to grow, so does the definition of student readiness, success, and long-term economic mobility. Educators and organizations like Junior Achievement recognize that financial literacy is most effective when paired with skills like workforce readiness and entrepreneurship. So what does financial literacy really mean, and how does JA bring this broader vision to life through results-oriented educational programs?

Financial literacy is an umbrella term that captures one’s ability to understand and skillfully manage personal finances. While the term itself is not new, the mindset surrounding its meaning and application has evolved significantly over time. What was once considered a life skill left primarily to families has evolved into a more structured approach focused on ensuring all students have equal access to high-quality financial education.

Today, access to financial education varies widely by school, age, and geography. Junior Achievement serves as a trusted partner in education, bringing expertise and curated resources into schools to make financial and work readiness skills more accessible. Our curriculum spans concepts such as the circular flow of an economy, the role of financial institutions, the difference between gross and net income, and the foundations of creating a balanced budget.

While financial literacy is a core value at JA, it does not exist in a silo. Managing money is critical, but so is learning how to secure employment and generate sustainable income. JA programs expand this foundation by equipping students with the skills they need to enter and succeed in the workforce, supporting pathways to economic mobility and long-term success.

We are energized by the increasing demand for real life skills in education and are proud of JA’s ability to deliver programs that create well-rounded, financially savvy and workforce-ready individuals.
